Our Approach to Healing Healthful “Yoga at Your Place”

Richard Pinneau offers a most gradual, gentle, universal approach to yoga posture classes — a style of yoga that enables anyone and everyone to reap the benefits of relaxation, enhanced flexibility, muscle toning, vitality and youthfulness that yoga is famous for. Emphasizing postures and simple breathing methods that are safe and useful for people of all ages and physical conditions, Dr. Pinneau helps individuals make the adjustments necessary to accommodate any special conditions that may apply to their particular circumstances.

Having sampled methods from widely different yoga schools during the last twenty years, Dr. Pinneau picks and chooses from among the most useful styles for the population that makes up a given class. Because he often works with classes of widely varying abilities, postures are emphasized that are useful for everyone — but where the stronger/more flexible students can be encouraged to work more intensely.

Each session aims to give a well-rounded work-over for the whole body, so classes always begin with warm-up postures and move through postures so that they build upon each other safely and constructively. A gentle relaxation at the end of class helps you take your enhanced well-being with you from the class. When possible, classes are one and one-quarter hours long to provide time for appropriate warming-up and cooling-down, but shorter periods can be arranged, for example to fit a class into a lunch hour. Preparation: no special equipment is needed if there is a well-padded floor (cushions can be arranged); comfortable clothing in which you can stretch; no shoes; an empty (mostly) stomach is recommended; avoiding caffeine for the couple hours before class helps muscles relax.

Still worried that maybe you can't do it?

Everyone has some limitation: back problems, old injuries, pregnancy, or just stiffness that has accumulated with age and stress. These classes are not aimed at the people who already know it all or who still have the body of an eighteen-year-old.  Dr. Pinneau motivates students to listen to their bodies and develop their skills gradually — as well as keep him informed about anything they are finding difficult. In addition, his years of working in psychology and biofeedback with accident victims and post-surgical patients has taught him how to keep his eye open for people who need (or just benefit from) modification of the classic approach to a posture.
